Welcome to the weblog of Glen McNamee, I am happily married father to one slightly horrible son. By day I work for large American computer company and by night I’m the webmaster of the ObscureInternet.com and several other websites.

More About Me..

20-May-2008 16:17:06The I bought a Wii Fit update

You know how I mentioned in the last update that I was feeling good about a few trips I had made to the gym, well in the forum I'd also been mulling over a buying a Wii Fit to help me get in shape. So a  couple of weeks ago, a bit the bullet and ordered one from the Internet, (as none where available in stores), and I am happy I did, because it's great.

I think the best thing about it is ability to track your weight and BMI on a daily basis, which is something I've been waiting to be able to do for a while. I've been going on it every day (except the weekend) since we got it. I'm finding the Yoga and Muscle exercises are very difficult, I even got a zero score on the yoga breathing exercise.

I'm using for 20-45 minutes a day at the moment. I started with the balance games a first to improve my balance, the football heading game is great fun, then the Aerobic before giving the Yoga and Muscle workouts a proper go.

Speaking of the Aerobic workouts, I have a guilty secret. I really enjoy the step exercises, I have been playing the basic and advanced mode every day. I've also being doing the Hula Hoop exercise daily today, this is one I find very difficult but I persevere because I think my hips need the workout.

The only thing I haven't really tried more than once is the jogging as I think jogging on the spot is a waste of time and incredible stupid looking.

Since starting, my weight has moved a great deal, it's been moving up and down (mostly up) by a maximum of 2 pounds.

I'll shall keep you updated on my progress.

20-May-2008 15:42:45The long awaiting catch up update XII

Well it's been a busy couple of weeks, with a number of work trips and a weekend break away. Once I get the new blog up and running, it will blogging on the fly a little easier, so I can provide smaller update more often rather than doing big updates less often, as I find the longer I leave the blog with out an update the harder it is to update at all.

Anyway, enough of that nonsense. As I previously mentioned I been working away for the last weeks, and during that time I managed to drag myself to the Hotel Gym on no less than four occasions and I was felt really good afterwards. So I think I'll should be heading off to the gym at home shortly.

The weekend break was a trip to Ireland to surprise mother with a Birthday party for her 60th Birthday. It was nice seeing the family all in one place, it doesn't happen often enough (we need more weddings). We got mother her birthday present of a Nintendo DS with Brain Training (and the word thing) it was on offer from GAME in Omagh.

The recent Weather had been very nice, which had improved my mood no end. I've always suspected I suffer from Season affective disorder, as I'm in miserable bugger during the winter months.  I've even managed to cut the grass in the garden for the first time this year, which was urgently need as it was beginning to look like a jungle.

28-Apr-2008 14:20:58Comments Boob
You have may a noticed that the existing blog comments have all gone missing, and you are unable to add new comments. This is because when I was working on the new version of the blog last night I'd changed some of the field type in the table that holds the comments in the database, however quite stupidly I changed the live table and not the back up table I'd been using for the new blog.

This means I still have all the comments, but I don't know which blog entry they belong to, or when they where submitted. So it is still possible to recover them, but it is going to take a lot of donkey work. So I am not going to fixing it until the new version of the blog goes live.

Just a quick follow up to the Video did NOT kill the radio star post, Reyn Ouwehand has made his Nemesis the Warlock arrangement available for download from Remix.Kwed.org and Ziphoid's big surprise for his final show was that he is starting is own radio station called SceneSat, which will play a wide verity of scene related music. You can even listen to a beta release of the stream now.

17-Apr-2008 16:29:57The joy of Instant Messaging

Right, it's been a long gap since the last blog, because of apathy, illness and work. I Usually would feel bad  about this, but not today for I have two reasons for this. The first reason is this Blogging without Obligation thing, and secondly according to Blogged.com, I've got a top blog. -

Aye, a few weeks back I got an email from Blogged.com telling me they have rated my site 8.6 out of ten.

c64GLeN @ obscureInternet.com at Blogged

My first thought is this some sort of con, as My blog is a bit rubbish and I'm not a good blogger by any means, but after checking the site it seems real enough, so I shall except the complaint with good faith and continue on with my mediocre bloggings.

Oh, I haven't touch the new design of the site for about two weeks, I should really get on with that.

Remember the Secret Santa 2007, Well in a new an exciting development I've finally eaten the chewing gum. (Hey, that's 8.6 out of ten blogging right there).

I had the old Amiga 1200 set up at the weekend, testing it out with the video capture card I've got. It is almost working perfectly using composite outputs except I've got a big border on the left hand of screen, which pushes the right hand side of the side of screen. I'm going to try routing through the TV and then using an S-Video cable to see if that resolves the border issue next weekend. If it does, I'll be uploading some video of my old programming project like Plorrds, to YouTube.

VSometime you forget how good thing the simple things are. I'd forgotten how good Instant message could be until early this week when I had a couple of conversations that made me both laugh and relieve a some good memories. The first conversion with was with the forum's Lazarus, but it was one of those you had to be there moments which had me laughing for a good 15 minutes and the second conversion was with my old flat mate Baz, in which we discussed out favourite C64 loading musics (Miami Vice), Max Headroom remix (Mahoney and Trace) David Whittaker track (Super Robin Hood, Trantor), and when I sent him Mike Post's 'The Rockford Files' music (from the Favourite TV theme tune thread in the forum) we then got in discussed how great the theme from 'V The original Mini-series' was and how the show is better than V The Final Battle, and appalling cack 'V - The Series'. Also did you know a 'V - The Second Generation' is in production, set twenty after the original mini-series and ignore the other follow on shows? I have a feeling the new show will be a bit gash, but hey, I'm hoping I'm wrong. Anyway I've gone of topic, so to summaries Instant Message can be great and not just all 'How R U?'.

Ironically I was listening to a remix of Max Headroom on Slayradio while typing the above, this time it was Wobbler's mix which is also excellent, but was one we forgot to mention.

03-Apr-2008 16:58:27Video did NOT kill the radio star

Despite many years of predictions of the demise of radio, I like many other people still enjoy listening to radio. I'll usually listen in the car to either Radio 1, if Scott Mills or Chris Moyles are on, or to Radio 5 for the news and sport. I also download the podcasts of these shows so I can listen to when I'm at home or on my MP3 enabled phone, although I've got a huge backlog of Podcasts to listen to.

When I'm at home I listen to some Internet radio stations, Slay Radio being my both my favourite and the one I listen to most. SLAY Radio is a Internet-only radio station dedicated to playing remixes of music from the Commodore 64 computer. It has a dedicated following and a number of DJs playing live shows where DJs and fans come together in an chatroom while on air.

Yesterday turned about to be a great day for Radio listening. I was working from home so I could have the Radio on without disturbing anyone else.

webcam.jpgMy listening started with The Anna & Mazipan Mid-Week Mid-Morning Madness which is on every Wednesday 10am to 12pm and is described as TWO HOURS of car crash radio LIVE from Kilburn, London. Anna Black and Mazipan make it up as they go along and play some of the best in never-heard-ever-type music, have proper comedy chat and lots and lots more bickering about tea, biscuits and bananas. I try and listen to the show as often as possible as it is always great fun.

Later that I was surprise to hear there was going to be an impromptu show on at four o'clock called 'Special Service' which is special edition of the Sunday Service, which is unsurprising usually on a Sunday, presented Live from The Church in Amsterdam with Reyn Ouwehand and co-host by Leoni. The show involves listeners making requests for tracks with a style to play them in and then Reyn plays them on his collection of instruments live and single handled (but with both hands).

I usually turn up late for shows on slay radio because of the combination of having a life (it is always getting in the way of my fun) and my poor planning. However I turn up early for this show and I was able to get my request in early meaning it was the first one Reyn played, after a little bit of technical trouble.

webcam.jpgThe show didn't have many requests because the song requester in the IRC chat room was broken, so I requested another track Nemesis the Warlock. Reyn played a beautiful mellow piano version as the last tack and winding down part of the show. I really would recommend you download the show, even if it is just to listen to that track it is inspired. (I'm listening again while I'm typing this)

The final show of the day on Slayradio was BBB (Boz's Bit o' Bollocks) which is a weekly show that is broadcast on every Wednesday at 7PM (UK time) hosted by Boz. The emphasis is getting the listeners involved, by playing their requests, talking about them on air and interacting with them on IRC and it really has to be heard to be believed. I got another request played on this show and Boz was kind enough to plug plug my YouTube videos.

I'll be listening to Slay Radio again tonight (although I will miss the first half the show due to other commitments) as it's Ziphoid's final show on Slay Radio and he has a big surprise that is well worth tuning in for.

31-Mar-2008 21:25:21Easter Holidays 2008
Well my holidays are well and truly over, as I returned to the working world today. The holidays where good, even if I didn't get everything done that I wanted to do. My Mother and Sister were visiting Middlesbrough during this time, so I spent a far bit of time visiting them.

During Easter we usual try and get Conor as few chocolate eggs as possible, so we buy him a little present instead. This year he got 'Wii Play' with a Wii remote, so we can two play games (like Wii Sports) together, and with the money he got from relatives over Easter he bought himself Classic Controller so he can play his Virtual console games. Pokemon Snap is a favourite of his, as he is quitebizarrely still Pokemon mad.

Oh, I gave myself a big of a treat over Easter too, Ebay give me one of the those vouchers of my next purchased. So I bought this;

For the less geeky of you, it's a 'Transformers Animated Starscream' which quite a difficult figure to get hold of (I don't even think they are out in the US yet) and thanks to the Ebay vouchers, I got it a very reasonable price (about 13 quids).

Finally I'm still working on the new design for the blog, which I'm pleased with so far and it should be ready quite(!) shortly.

28-Mar-2008 15:03:26The end of the Holiday
Well Hello, just a quick update while I'm in the mood.

My Holidays are almost over, It's back to work on Monday and I've not caught up with all the things I wanted to do while I was off (surprise, surprise) but I did get the C64Glen show episode #5 finished, and launched the new version of ObscureInternet which is no mean feat.

One of the jobs I didn't get to was to make reasonable progress on the new blog design, oh well, I'm sure you can await.

I got an interest message on my facebook wall, this would have bothered me in the past as I was a bit obsessed with trying making everyone love me (which was obviously a totally lost cause), but no I'm just amused. I've offended someone on theInternet.

Anyway I've always hate people who say 'Get a life' because it usually used by comment trolls on YouTube (who surprisingly haven't posted any videos) and it means nothing other than 'Try and make better use of your time'. Thanks for the information, I'll enrol in a time management course straight away.

12-Mar-2008 16:42:51The FA Cup and Upcoming holidays

I've missed some good opportunities to blog over the past few weeks. I regret this, mostly because I can't remember what I was going to blog about.

Anyway, I would probably have blogged about the Football, as since the last update I was at the Middlesbrough home FA cup games against Sheff Utd and Cardiff, as you probably are aware. Boro blew away the best chance they've ever had of winning the FA Cup being performing against Cardiff like a bunch of dead haddocks. This was with out doubt the most disgusting, disappointing, and embarrassing game of football I've ever seen.I suppose the only bright point was the Cardiff fan, who sang a number ofhumourous chats during the game, mostly anti-English and pro-bestiality.

I've also fix the comments RSS feed (again) it was breaking when because if could not handle the way some comments had paragraphs or double spaces, I've made it a little less sensitive about such things.

Finally, the main news is it is near the end of the year at work, and I've got a load of holidays left. Since I'm not allowed to carry them over to next year or sell them, as of tomorrow I'm on holiday until the end of the month. I plan on catching up on few jobs I've got behind in, the garden, the c64glen show #5 and the new designs for ObscureInternet and this blog.
